This was painted in the days following the tragic events of that awful day of September 11, 2001, in response to the terrible wasting of humanity, hearts and hopes. My individual reaction as to that day was to cry much later while first, I was incredibly angry. I think that speaks for many of us.

But because I was thousands of miles away from the events of 9/11, I also felt ineffective, unable to lend a hand.

So, I turned to the physicality of painting, if only to take action. My intention in this work was to honor the valor of all affected by the dreadful events of that day — those who perished, those who survived, all of us who suffered — with this depiction of upright strength, ‘un-destructed’ (or non-destroyed-in-character) structure despite the convolution of forms, the permanence of the changes made, all things considered, everything realigned but still lined up and organized despite the destruction.

This painting is included in the Permanent Collection of the Library of Congress September 11, 2001 Digital Archive.
